Choice Hotels sought a site-specific design concept for their flagship Cambria brand that uniquely represented Boston while exuding a boutique level of design. Materials and spatial form, light and nature, and the personality of an academic culture were combined to create a gateway moment on this site where South Boston connects to the city center. This interior strategy crafted a unique response to the city, the surrounding neighborhood, and Cambria’s brand aspirations.
Prior to our work, an original concept for the hotel was prepared by design architect, VJAA. RODE completed the building as Executive Architect and developed the multi-faceted strategy for the interior design including the lobby, public spaces, guest rooms, as well as Six West, the hotel's bar/lounge and roof deck restaurant.
RODE also collaborated with artists and fabricators. Yellow Goat Design created a custom chandelier, which was inspired by the weeping willows of Boston’s Public Garden. London-based artist Simon Heijdens’ illuminated the lobby with his Lightweed’s installation of light-projected tree-forms, providing an interactive experience for guests that replicates Boston’s distinct seasons. The delivered end result is one of sophistication and simplicity.
