Description
RODE reimagined a former Panera Bread in the midst of Newport’s Long Wharf Mall, giving it a fresh identity that seamlessly blends warmth and sophistication. Partnering with our clients at Mother, the goal was to preserve as much of the existing infrastructure as possible while crafting a space that feels inviting—whether for a leisurely apertivo, a romantic date night, or a family gathering in peak summer season.
At the heart of this transformation was a carefully planned redesign of the space and the way the team would operate. The previous POS counter now houses a gelateria and grab-and-go slice station, while the former order Panera pickup area was reborn as an intimate 13-seat bar. A bonus was the existing bread oven, now repurposed for baking fresh loaves for sale. The team wanted the true focal point to be the Marra Forni pizza oven, strategically placed at the entrance. A large banquette with custom hung antiqued mirrors creates a division between the dining room and bar area while still visually being one space. We created richness and warmth with a consistent deep wood tone and a striking marble bar. The design narrative balances casual comfort with elevated elegance; it’s a versatile, welcoming haven for Newport’s locals and visitors alike, celebrating the art of dining with style and substance.

It was important that our physical division of space had a unique craftsmanship detail to it. We designed our banquette to include antiqued mirrors with a wooden frame, hung with black leather and a brass fastener detail. Just another opportunity to reflect the harbor across the street back into the space!
