Description

The design needed to transform an existing restaurant into a new concept with the twin challenges of a conservative construction budget and a commitment to minimize the renovation’s environmental footprint. By carefully sculpting new geometry around the old, we were able to realize our design while reusing all major infrastructure. Colorful geometric tile inspired by Portuguese townhomes brightens the backbar without needing to replace the existing taps. Similarly, the space already featured an open kitchen worth celebrating; by refining the view with added curves and functional shelving, we were able to frame the magic at work with a minimal material cost. The original horseshoe-shaped bar design was dark and cut off from the rest of the dining room. By opening it up, we created more flexible seating within the lounge area and embraced a central column with custom banquette seating.

To celebrate our gloriously high ceiling at the exterior wall, our team created a custom chain fixture inspired by a fishing net with suspended opal globes of light. Designed strategically to install around the challenging existing ceiling infrastructure, the sculpture is a work of art, infusing the dining room with elegance and warmth. Baleia’s success shows that our firm’s commitment to intentional sustainability - especially in retrofit restaurants - pays off. Good design can responsibly balance resiliency with achieving an elevated atmosphere where guests can enjoy award-winning cuisine and exceptional service.

Pulling inspiration from Lisbon to build an inspired palette of pattern, color and texture

Chef Andrew Hebert shared his personal photos from his trips to Portugal with our design team, along with his descriptions of the cuisine, culture, architecture and cookware traditional to the Meditteranean destination. This, along with our own research into the country, led to a rich and inspired interior palette. Just as important, RODE creatively adjusted the existing restaurant space to accommodate a new operator and concept, improving circulation and flow while preserving as much as possible and being sensitive to our client's budget.
