Description

The Cousens Gymnasium, built in 1931, is the oldest building within Tufts University's growing Athletic Complex. Its aging, underutilized lobby didn't reflect the university's modern sensibilities or the goals of its athletic program. RODE's redesign retains the unique historic character of the building while looking to future.

Existing doors were removed to open up direct views from the lobby onto the basketball courts below, allowing game day sounds and energy to permeate the space and opening up a view corridor from the exterior directly to the athletic space within. An acoustic soffit with integrated lighting draws your eye to a panoramic mural featuring the Tufts University mascot, Jumbo.
